Class I paths (bike paths) are bicycle and pedestrian facilities that are separate from adjacent roads.

Class I paths form part of a system of bicycle and pedestrian facilities that includes sidewalks, bicycle lanes (Class II bikeways), bicycle routes (Class III bikeways), and separated bikeways (Class IV, for exclusive use by bicycles). As defined by Caltrans in Chapter 1000 of the highway Design manual, these facilities are part of a  comprehensive bicycle and pedestrian active transportation network.

This study focuses on Class I paths, the off street trails network.  These trails may be located adjacent to or near a road, railroad or other corridor, like this:
